Introduction
Research involving human participants carries ethical responsibilities to protect the dignity, welfare, privacy, and autonomy of participants. In Canada, the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS 2) establishes the national standard for the ethical conduct of research involving human participants. Compliance with TCPS 2 is required for institutions eligible to administer funding from Canada's federal research agencies and helps ensure the integrity, credibility, and dissemination of research findings. Many scholarly journals, conferences, funding agencies, and collaborating institutions also require evidence of appropriate research ethics review.
The Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) is committed to ensuring that research involving human participants is conducted in accordance with the highest ethical standards. Research involving human participants conducted by RMC faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, and students must comply with the TCPS 2, as well as applicable Department of National Defence (DND) and Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) policies, including DAOD 5061 and DAOD 5062.
The RMC Research Ethics Board (REB) is responsible for reviewing research involving human participants that falls within its mandate and for assessing compliance with applicable ethical requirements. Depending on the nature of the project, additional reviews, approvals, or organizational permissions may also be required.
Research involving human participants may not commence until all required ethics approvals and organizational authorizations have been obtained. Researchers are responsible for ensuring that their projects comply with applicable policies and submission requirements.
