Student Financial Aid

Introduction

A number of financial aid programs are available to students pursuing university studies at the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC). Please consult the information below for more details.

Important: Although RMC is physically, located in Ontario our students come from across Canada. It is important that you first determine if you can meet the residency requirement to apply for financial aid through the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) or if you need to apply through the province where you meet the residency requirement. These are links to the student financial assistance programs for other provinces.

Ontario residency requirements

Full-time students

  • have always lived in Ontario or;
  • Ontario is the last province you have lived in for 12 months in a row without being a full-time post-secondary student or;
  • you live in Ontario now AND have lived in Canada for less than 12 months in a row.

If you are married/common-law, you can be considered an Ontario resident if:

  • your spouse has always lived in Ontario or;
  • your spouse has lived in Ontario for the last 12 months in a row without being a full-time post-secondary student or;
  • All of these statements are true:
    • you now reside in Ontario;
    • you’ve lived in Canada for less than 12 months in a row;
    • your spouse has lived in Canada for less than 12 months in a row.

If you qualify as a dependent student, you are considered an Ontario resident if:

  • Ontario is the last province in which your parent(s) have lived in for at least 12 months in a row or;
  • All of these statements are true:
    • you now reside in Ontario;
    • you’ve lived in Canada for less than 12 months in a row;
    • your parent(s) have lived in Canada for less than 12 months in a row.

Part-time students

  • have always lived in Ontario or;
  • Ontario is the last province you have lived in for 12 months in a row without being a full-time post-secondary student or;
  • you live in Ontario now AND have lived in Canada for less than 12 months in a row

Provincial Student Loans and Bursaries: Unlike some civilian Universities, RMC usually has restricted access with respect to provincial funding. For example, the OSAP office acts as the direct administrator for RMC students, so when documentation says refer to your Financial Aid office, for RMC students that is OSAP directly. Please feel free to contact us with questions and concerns, but in most cases, we will have to contact OSAP. We can be reached at financial.aid@rmc.ca
Important: RMC does not receive money directly from provincial funding sources therefore whatever money you receive is 100% of your funding and with that, you are responsible for paying your tuition fees to RMC

Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP)

  • To apply to the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP), you must register at the OSAP website and fill out a Full-Time or Part-Time application, as applicable.

  • OSAP will communicate with you through your message inbox of your account. It is important you check your messages regularly and opt-in for email notifications.

  • You can complete most actions through your account, including uploading documents requested by OSAP during the application process.

  • The Ministry, including salary, will verify all information submitted to OSAP.

  • The Ministry will verify income with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and any discrepancies may result the reassessment of your application.

  • OSAP for full-time students is normally distributed twice a year. In (September) you will receive 60% of your entitlement. In (January) you will receive the remaining 40%.

Deadlines to apply

  • For full-time students and part-time students with study periods of 21 weeks or more, submit your OSAP application no later than 60 days before the end of your study period.

  • For part-time students with study periods of 20 weeks or less, submit your OSAP application no later than 40 days before the end of your study period.

Continuation of interest-free status

If you have previous student loans and you plan to continue your studies but do not plan to apply for additional student assistance, for the upcoming school year, you must ensure your previous loans are placed in interest-free status so that you do not have to repay the loans and interest while you are in school. To maintain interest-free status on your loans, you must be enrolled full-time and you must complete the online Continuation of Interest-Free Status application through OSAP or through NSLSC.

Important If you have withdrawn from courses since receiving your OSAP funding, and this has resulted in a credit on your student account, RMC is required to send all/part of the refund to the National Student Loan Services Centre (NSLSC) where it will be applied to your outstanding student loans.

Maintaining academic progress

Students receiving OSAP must maintain satisfactory academic progress according to the Ministry of Colleges and Universities’ policy. This means students are required to successfully complete the academic requirements of their programme to continue to be eligible for OSAP. Frequent or multiple programme switches, drops, withdrawals and/or repeats of programmes that are funded by OSAP may also be considered lack of academic progress and direction.

Full-time & Part-time criteria for OSAP

Note: A student, with a permanent disability, who is enrolled in 40% to 59% of a full course load, has the option of either applying for part-time funding or for OSAP for Full-Time Students.
