Research in this field is very broad as various materials are investigated by using different established techniques. Research in Material Sciences at RMC pertains both to theoretical and applied physics.

Laboratory for Ferroelectric and Optical Materials
The Laboratory of Ferroelectric and Optical Materials carries out research on the characterization of ferroelectric and optical materials to improve our understanding of their behaviour and to help in designing useful applications. Experiments have been put in place to study the photomechanical behaviour and laser-induced nano-structures in azobenzene-containing materials, surface plasmon resonance, photovoltaic properties of solar cells, photoluminescence and electroluminescence properties of organic compounds, electromechanical, electro-optic and dielectric properties of materials, etc…

Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE)

R&D in NDE includes laboratory experimentation and computer modeling in the area of:
- Eddy current testing
- Multi-frequency eddy current testing
- Pulsed eddy current
- Remote field eddy current
- Probability of detection
- Ultrasonic testing
High-energy laser/matter interaction and micro-machining
(Dr L. Levesque ).
Research is conducted using CO2 lasers to heat materials to various degrees:
- Spectroscopic analysis on different materials
- Localized heating and thermal lensing
- Micro-machining of materials
