A former Head of RMC's History Department, Dean of Arts and Chairman of the War Studies programme, Dr.Haycock is professor of Military History and War Studies. He received his university education at WLU and Waterloo and his doctorate from the University of Western Ontario.
He specializes in the history of Canadian defence policy, war and technology, warfare in the modern world, munitions procurement and policy, and strategic theory. He teaches in both the undergraduate history programme and the War Studies graduate school.
A former member of the editorial boards of the journals War and Society and Ontario History, he is currently on the Advisory Board of the Canadian Military Journal. He is a past president of the Canadian Military History Group and a member of the Partnership for Peace Consortium of Defence Academies.
His publications include Image of the Indian (WLU Press,1970);
Sam Hughes: The Public Career of a Controversial Canadian (Wilfrid Laurier UP, 1986) and Teaching Military History: Clio and Mars in Canada (Athabasca UP, 1995). He has edited Regular Armies and Insurgency (Croom Helm, 1979) and co-edited (both with K.E. Neilson) Men, Machines and War (Wilfrid Laurier UP) and The Cold War and National Defence(NewYork, 1990) and (with B.D. Hunt), Canada's Defence: Perspectives on Policy in the 20th Century (Copp Clark Pitman, 1993). He has also written many articles and book chapters.
Married to Rita and with three grown children, his hobbies are gardening, hunting and target shooting.
