Chaplain Services

The RMC Chaplain Team offers spiritual, religious and pastoral care to all CAF members who are posted to, attending, or working at RMC and CDA HQ, and to their immediate families.

We are an experienced, collaborative, multi-faith team of military Chaplains.

Who can visit a Chaplain?

  • Any RMC military Staff, Cadet and their immediate family members;
  • DND Employees may also make use of Chaplain Services, usually as a means to access support and referral to appropriate Civilian Resources, as well as direction to programs and support offered through the Employment Assistance Program (EAP); and
  • Leaders, at all levels, have a duty to make the services of a Chaplain available to persons in their command.

How can I meet with a Chaplain?

Notes

  • Your chain of command must be aware of your whereabouts; however, it is up to you how much you share with the Chain of Command regarding the reason you wish to meet with a Chaplain;
  • If you request a Chaplain's assistance with a personal issue (Compassionate, interpersonal, etc.), the Chaplain will usually need to confirm the details of your situation before advocating on your behalf with the Chain of Command; and
  • The chaplain will request your permission to engage the appropriate people, whether that is another Helping Professional, your Chain of Command or another agency, to assist you in your request.  Without that permission the Chaplain, and as a result the Chain of Command, are limited in their ability to assist you with your request.

In the case you need Emergency Chaplain Services

If you are experiencing a life threatening emergency: Call 911.

  • For non-duty time periods such as after-hours or weekends, or if you are unable to reach a chaplain during work hours, please contact the RMC Duty Officer at (613) 483-3024 and ask to speak with the Duty Chaplain (24/7).

What does a Chaplain do?

  • Provide a Ministry of Presence (being with members in their workplace)
  • Advise on Religious, Spiritual, Ethical and Morale issues
  • Provide Pastoral care and counselling
  • Provide religious services as requested and facilitate the worship of all
  • Provide education regarding Spiritual Resilience
  • Oversee and train Sentinels, maintaining both a Cadet and Staff sentinel network (Peer Support) at RMC
  • Provide after hours 24/7 pastoral care for emergency and urgent situations

What types of problems can a Chaplain help with?

  • Spiritual/religious questions
  • Help in decision-making
  • Personal and academic stress
  • Workload balance
  • Home sickness
  • Family problems
  • Grief or bereavement
  • Illness (of self or loved one)
  • Addictions
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Abuse
  • Life Transitions
  • Offering a safe place to talk
  • Etc.

Where does the Chaplain fit in the Chain of Command?

  • Chaplains do not hold Command Authority and are not in a CAF member’s Chain of Command. This allows for members and their family to have candid conversations that are confidential in nature and would only be shared with the Chain of Command as per the guidelines shared above;
  • The Chaplain has access to all members, from the Cadet to the Commandant, and may also act as a liaison with other Helping professionals;
  • Chaplains advise the Commandant and others in the Chain of Command on spiritual, religious, and ethical matters. They also provide advice regarding issues that adversely affect morale within the RMC;
  • On any issue, such as compassionate leave, a chaplain makes recommendations, while it is the Chain of Command that makes the final decision and/or authorization; and
  • The RMC Senior Chaplain is a Senior/Direct Advisor to the Commandant and Commanding Officers at RMC and MPG / CDA.

Specific Religious Services at RMC

  • RMC chaplains provide and facilitate religious and spiritual services.
  • RMC has three spiritual reflection spaces on the third floor of Yeo Hall, 22 Amiens Ave, that are opened 24/7 and are meant to be spaces of reflection, prayer and meditation.
  • During the First Year Orientation Period (FYOP), Chaplains provide spiritual worship services with times and locations provided to cadets and staff through the FYOP orientations and as posted on campus.
  • Outside of FYOP, RMC Chaplains work directly with the CFB Chaplain team and encourage all who are looking for worship to attend services offered at CFB Kingston Chapels (please note there is potential for schedules to vary based on the time of year. If you have any questions, please contact CFB Kingston Chaplains at ext. 4041 or the RMC Chaplain team):
    • Roman Catholic: Sunday Mass 0900 in French and 1030 in English at Holy Family Chapel (35 Lundy’s Lane, Kingston);
    • Protestant: Sunday worship 1030 at Trinity Chapel (22 Lundy’s Lane, Kingston);
    • Dharma Exchange: Monday evening. A virtual space to explore Buddhism. For more information, please contact with Chaplain Joanne Yuasa (joanne.yuasa@forces.gc.ca); and
    • Friday Juma Prayers (Muslim): led monthly at RMC and at the Base Spiritual Fitness Center (22 Lundy’s Lane, Kingston).
  • RMC Chaplains also encourage cadets and staff to attend community led faith and spiritual based services in their local community and can help discern what community organization or faith community would be best suited for your needs and situation.

Accommodation of Religious and Spiritual Requirements, Practices and Observances

RMC Chaplains advise the chain of command and CAF members and cadets on spiritual and religious accommodations requests within the CAF IAW DAOD 5516-3, Religious or Spiritual Accommodation.
